Northbrook Rocks the Assembly Hall

Students perform on stage M usic students from Northbrook College rocked the Worthing Assembly Hall in an impressive gig held on Monday night in front of hundreds of foreign students. The live music event was the second show that the students had performed to members of ‘Welcome’, a local committee which looks after thousands of foreign students coming to Worthing throughout the year.

Four talented bands, from the College and Worthing area, played the massive Assembly Hall stage alongside warm up acts between sets. The gig was successfully operated by Northbrook’s Foundation Degree Music students as part of their Live Sound Module for their course. The event followed on from a gig performed back in July to 700 ‘Welcome’ students.

The ‘Welcome’ scheme, which has been running for 25 years, was set up for students aged 11-19 years from all over the world to visit Worthing and stay with local families. During their stay, students spend their mornings learning English and enjoy excursions and events organised for them by five volunteers.

Cindy Baker, the Chair of ‘Welcome’, got in touch with Northbrook’s Music lecturer, Mike Pailthorpe, when she was on the look out for music departments to get involved with the events.  Cindy said “It is difficult to find something for everyone to do, especially as there are so many students all with different interests and tastes. Organising the music events meant that everyone was catered for and we will definitely be looking to do it again.”

The Assembly Hall was an ideal venue for the free gig, which saw the audience break-dancing and jumping about to the acts that were put together by Mike and his music students.

Mike thought the gig was a big success and said “Doing gigs like this, especially in such a fantastic venue, is really good experience for our students and gets the College more involved in the Worthing Community”.
