Northbrook Technician Wins The Guardian National Photography Competition

A aron Yeandle, a photography technician at Northbrook College has won a nationwide photography contest run by The Guardian and iStockphoto.

The BritainiS competition required applicants to identify the defining images of Britain in 2010 and was entered by over 1,700 applicants.

Aaron won the Culture category with his entry and then went on to be crowned Overall Competition Winner and claimed the top prize of £1500.

Aaron, who has studied photography for many years and now works in the photography department at Northbrook, entered his photograph entitled The Western Ranger. The award winning photograph was taken as part of a series of social documentaries in Burton-on-Trent whilst Aaron studied photography for an MA in Fine Art.

The team of expert judges, including the Guardian Head of Photography, Roger Tooth; Simon Moran, UK Director of Photography for iStockphoto and an independent expert from visual arts in the UK, named Aaron’s work the single best image from all those entered in the contest.

Roger Tooth said, “This is a great representation of a British child play acting as a US cultural icon in a back-alley of a midland city. The way that the boy confronts the camera and viewer is irresistible.”

Aaron said on his win, “I am still a bit in shock but to have my work recognised is a real motivation to continue with my photography.”
