Students Style The Stars
T heatre Hair & Make-up students from Northbrook College worked on two major production sets up in London - a BBC drama and a new advert for Hovis.
Four Foundation Degree students worked on the set of a new BBC4 Drama, Breaking the Mould. The drama featured a host of stars, including Kate Fleetwood, who has starred in numerous Broadway shows, Dominic West from The Wire as well as actors from various medical dramas such as Doctors and Harley Street. The students were required on set to help style the cast and create prosthetics for the patients. Lisa Thorne, Alex Jones, Natalie Dorothy and Ria McMahon spent the entire day on set, stopping only for a lunch break before carrying on with touch ups in the afternoon.
Directed by Peter Hoar, the drama was filmed in Hornsey Town Hall, London. The girls reported that BBC Productions had transformed the location into a hospital, Gentlemans’ club and an office.
Their tutor, Rupert Simon, a visiting tutor to the College who has 25 years’ experience in wig and hair dressing, got the job for the students through his contacts with the production company. Filming finished at the beginning of June and the series should be out later in the year.
Another four of Rupert’s students also styled over 40 extras on location for the new Hovis advert. Holly Hince, Clare Choate, Natalie Bond and Laura Hyman spent the day up at the Royal Oak pub in Columbia Road recreating a market street scene to advertise the bread company.
The girls were required to do old-fashioned make-up and style everything from hair to beards and moustaches. The advert, due to be aired this month, was shot in black and white to reflect the theme of nostalgia used recently in a selection of Hovis adverts.
