Student Sculptor Stuart Slade's Scuttleheads Scandal
M
aking their debut back in June at Northbrook’s End of Year Shows, ‘The Curious Scuttleheads’ have wreaked havoc across the south east.
The five super-sized spider sculptures created by Fine Art student Stuart Slade were initially free to roam on the main Arundel roundabout on the A27 as this year’s start point for the Arundel festival trail. However, due to a solitary complaint from a local woman claiming her children were scared and that the freestanding artwork distracted drivers, the spiders were evicted!
This hasn’t scuppered the spiders though. Part insect, part human and part machine, the spiders were created to survive hostile conditions and they have scuttled their way off to the grounds of Arundel Castle at the request of the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk. The Duchess has invited the spiders to stretch their long legs on the lawns of the castle until the end of September.
Stuart and his scorned spiders have received a phenomenal amount of media exposure and public support with articles in The Telegraph, The Metro and all the local papers as well as radio coverage.
