Northbrook Shines at Sussex Spring Awards
T wo Northbrook students have won prizes at this year’s Sussex Spring Awards, the annual event held by the county’s colleges at the Brighton Metropole. Northbrook catering students were also chosen to serve the drinks during the awards dinner, while Northbrook beauty students offered complimentary manicures to the guests.
Literacy Student, Janice Earl, was the winner of the City & Guilds Learner Making the Most Progress Award. Janice, who has cerebral palsy, started the literacy course with no qualifications and has since achieved three qualifications. Northbrook’s Head of Community Learning, Jan Summers, said “Janice is a hard working conscientious student who has had barriers to learning in the past but has overcome these. She has won the hearts of all the students.” Janice was presented with a £100 high street gift voucher as well as a trophy.
Adam Scrase, an Aeronautical Engineering student, was a runner up for the Edexcel BTEC Learner of the Year Award. Adam was involved in a serious motorcycle accident during his course and yet he still managed to be part of the design and manufacture team which constructed an entry in the International Birdman competition. Aeronautical Curriculum Leader, Andy Bellinger, said, “Adam has been an asset to the Aeronautical Department and is an inspiration to his fellow students”.
