Sussex Spring Awards 2009

Dan at the Awards N orthbrook shone at the recent Sussex Spring Awards with a student prize and live demonstrations.

Media Production student, Daniel England, received the runner up prize for the Learner Progress Award at the prestigious annual awards. The ceremony, organised by FE (Further Education) Sussex,  targets students who have achieved their qualifications in vocational education and training in the face of adversity and personal difficulty.Daniel, 23, who suffers from mild cerebral palsy and Asperger syndrome, was put forward by his tutor at the College as he had achieved grades of distinction on his course as well as preparing to swim for the UK in the Paralympics in 2012. Whilst studying on his course, Dan has been training three times a week as well as entering countless competitions both locally and nationally. He already boasts 350 medals from the 17 years that he has been swimming.

Dan was thrilled to win the award and the inspirational student hopes to achieve even more in both his studies and swimming. He said, “I have loved swimming since the age of four and hope to coach the sport once I can no longer compete”. Dan also eventually hopes to use his media qualification to become a destination scout so that his can exercise his other passion, photography.

The award ceremony, held at the Hilton Brighton Metropole, was certainly a busy event for many other Northbrook students. Second year Theatre Make Up & Hair students demonstrated their skills on the Northbrook stand by transforming a live model into a convincing lizard as well as doing some funky 60’s and 70’s hair and make up.

Nineteen Northbrook Hospitality and Catering students put their skills to excellent use by providing a silver service and wine service to almost 200 guests that attended the sit down meal.
